Description
A impressionistic peaceful scene of the largest river in North America, the mighty Mississippi. In the foreground of the image is the river and in the background is the Hernando Desoto bridge that crosses the river over into Arkansas. This crossing is a vital connector for transportation in the the United States. The bridge is located very close to the San Madrid fault.
In 1811 an earthquake occurred along the fault and led to the creation of Reelfoot Lake in eastern Tennessee. Beginning in 2000 the first of several phases to retrofit the bridge to be less affected by Seismic activity was began.
