For many years these old country stores dotted the landscape of the Mississippi Delta. Most of them existed on plantations where they were known as the commissary.
The commissary was the center of activity where the sharecroppers that lived on the property would exchange their labor for goods from the store. Almost everything anyone needed could be purchased from the commissary including food, clothing and other dry goods.
The double screen doors of this old store speak of the times past. Across the front of each door is a bar or handle where typically bread or something similar was advertised. Across the stop under the stair step rook you can see circles where signs have been removed, most like those of the coca cola company.
Today's plantations have changed and with the movement to modern mechanized farming most of the commissaries and country stores have closed and been re-purposed.
